Welcome to Inside KisanHub, a selection of interviews with the talented people behind the KisanHub tech. This month we caught up with Joel Castro Reynoso, in the Engineering team.
Hello Joel! To kick things off please can you tell us a little bit about yourself and explain your role at KisanHub?
I am a Senior Software Engineer and joined the team a couple of years ago. Software Engineering has always fascinated me, alongside Maths and AI (Artificial Intelligence) I simply love it! I graduated in Computer Science and have worked software development for years in a number of sectors, including Banking, Healthcare, Government and Energy. I was born in the Dominican Republic, moved to Spain when I was a teenager and can speak over five different languages, including various flavours of Spanish, Galician and Japanese.
What are you working on right now and what will this mean for our customers?
We have just launched our new feature, Paperless Load Tickets which we are really excited about because it saves so much time and reduces errors for our customers. It is a big step up for the industry because it is providing the most efficient way to handle the ‘seed to supermarket’ process.
Essentially, we are modernising a classic way of sharing information, I always believe tech should be built in a way that the person doesn’t even realise they are using it, it should feel natural, simple and enjoyable. I’m also working on our Field & Store inventory, which connects everything together.
Earlier this week you won the award for 'KisanHubber of the Year', Congratulations! 🎉
What do you most enjoy about being part of the KisanHub team?
The people in this amazing team! I was shocked and very proud when I won the award, it’s been a tough year for everyone, but as a team, we’ve made it as enjoyable as possible and we’ve achieved a lot in 2020!
What three words would you use to describe KisanHub?
Passion, from day one, and dedication, plus we are a very solutions-focused team. I realise that is over 5 but it is tricky to narrow it down!
Do you have a work mantra that you go by?
To enjoy work as much as any hobby. If you have that mindset, I find it can increase your productivity, creativity and overall positivity, which is win-win for everyone because it rubs off on the team.
You graduated in Computer Science, how does this help your projects at KisanHub?
This gave me the foundation for my skillset and expertise, plus an analytical mindset. When people try to solve something you need to create and start from scratch, that’s what I enjoy most; to solve problems in a way that hasn’t been thought of before.
You have previously worked in the Travel & Leisure industry, what motivated you to move to a tech startup?
KisanHub’s mission contributes to improving the world, enough said! We are passionate about improving the way we supply food and the planet.
Finally, as we work in the agri-food industry, do you have a favourite fruit or vegetable?
Growing up in the Dominica Republic I have great memories of my friend's and I climbing Guayaba or 'Guava' trees, they are sweet and delicious!
Also, I would say if I was going more mainstream, it would have to be the versatile Tomato, with its 'umami' flavour, which is just awesome! Umami has been translated from Japanese as 'yummy' or a 'pleasant savoury taste', they go with almost any dish, the perfect all-rounder, literally! 😁🍅
